Long ago when the universe was created, there was only silence. Brahma the creator wanted the world to be filled with wisdom and beauty. From his divine power, Saraswathi appeared. When she played her veena, music flowed everywhere. Birds began to sing, rivers danced rhythmically, and people learned to speak and write.

That is why Saraswathi is called Vani Devi, the goddess of speech and knowledge.

On Saraswathi Pooja, people place their books, musical instruments, and tools of learning before her. Children begin their first lessons through a ritual called Aksharabhyasam. It is believed that on this day Saraswathi blesses students with wisdom and helps remove ignorance.
