Day 1 of Navaratri: Goddess Shailaputri

Goddess Shailaputri is worshipped on the first day of Navaratri. She is the first of the nine forms of Goddess Durga and represents strength, purity, and devotion.

Who Is Goddess Shailaputri?

The name Shailaputri comes from two Sanskrit words: Shaila, meaning mountain, and Putri, meaning daughter. She is known as the daughter of Himavan, the king of the mountains.

She was born as Sati in a previous life and later was born as Parvati, the daughter of Himavan. She represents the enduring power of the Divine Mother.

How Is Goddess Shailaputri Depicted?

Goddess Shailaputri is traditionally shown riding a white bull named Nandi. She holds a trident in one hand and a lotus in the other.

The bull represents strength and stability, the trident represents divine power, and the lotus symbolizes purity.

Why Is Goddess Shailaputri Worshipped on Day 1 of Navaratri?

Goddess Shailaputri is worshipped on the first day of Navaratri because she is the first of the nine forms of Durga named in the Devi Kavacham. Identified with Parvati, the daughter of Himavan, she represents the beginning of the Navadurga tradition. Her association with the mountain has also inspired the spiritual interpretation of strength, stability, and a firm foundation for devotion.

May Goddess Shailaputri bless us with strength, peace and devotion.

Om Sri Matre Namah.
